Alan Daniel Jones
Alan Daniel Jones’ work explores ideas that surround notions of identity. Jones works across a broad spectrum of mediums and takes a personal approach to the subject matter. Through this process, Jones aims to communicate the intricacies of human connections and how his roots subsequently influence his work.
Jones gained his Advanced Diploma of Fine Arts in 1997 from the National Art School in Sydney before furthering his education abroad as the recipient of the Inaugural Pat Corrigan Travelling Scholarship for Painting. In 1998, Jones returned to Australia, where he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2000 at the National Art School. In 2004, Jones’s portfolio of ten paintings and drawings inspired by his time working in France and Germany won him the prestigious Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship (administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales). The Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship saw Jones return to Europe. Here, he took up a four-month-long residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris before working in Berlin and New York.
Jones has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize (2016, 2014 and 2013), Wynne Prize (2017) and Sulman Prize (2020, 2019 and 2005) at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. His work has won many art awards, including the 2022 Vincent Prize, 2015 Mosman Art Prize, 2014 Kilgour Prize, 2011 Fisher’s Ghost Art Award, 2010 Kedumba Drawing Award and 2008 Paddington Art Prize for landscape painting. Significant public and corporate collections to have acquired Jones’s work include the National Portrait Gallery, Art Gallery of South Australia, Artbank, and Macquarie Group.
Jones has presented over thirty solo exhibitions and has included his work in curated group exhibitions throughout state, regional, and commercial galleries in Australia, the UK, and Asia. Alan Daniel Jones currently lives and works in Eora/Sydney, Australia.
